The medal was silvered to enhance its appearance — a common historical practice intended to improve visual qualities by applying a silver or gold coating. In this case, the surface was silvered over existing nicks, scratches and areas of corrosion. It was also subtly darkened (patinated) to accentuate the finer details of the design.
Obv.: Conjoined busts of Emperor Nicholas II in the uniform of the 4th Imperial Family Rifle Guard Regiment and Tsar Michael Fyodorovich wearing the Monomakh’s Cap and ceremonial robes; dates beneath the truncation; engraver’s initials to the right under the line of truncation.

Over the following 300 years, the Romanovs oversaw Russia’s expansion into a vast empire. The 300th anniversary in 1913 was celebrated across the country as a symbol of dynastic strength and national unity under Nicholas II, the last reigning tsar of the Romanov line.
