The medal was silvered to enhance its appearance — a common historical practice intended to improve visual qualities by applying a silver or gold coating. In this case, the surface was silvered over existing nicks, scratches and areas of corrosion. It was also subtly darkened (patinated) to accentuate the finer details of the design. 

Obv.: Conjoined busts of Emperor Nicholas II in uniform of the 4th Imperial Family Rifle Guard Regiment and Tsar Michael Fyodorovich wearing the Monomakh’s Cap and robes; dates below the truncation; engraver’s initials to the right under the line of truncation.

The medal commemorates the 300th anniversary of the House of Romanov, established in 1613 when Michael Fyodorovich, the first Romanov tsar, was elected to the throne. The dynasty ruled Russia for three centuries, overseeing its transformation into a major European empire. The celebration in 1913 symbolized imperial continuity and loyalty to the reigning monarch, Nicholas II, a direct descendant of Michael.
