Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) was a celebrated French painter and draftsman, recognized as one of the leading figures of early 18th-century Rococo art. Watteau is renowned for his innovative “fêtes galantes” - elegant scenes of aristocratic leisure and courtship set in idyllic landscapes—which captured the grace, subtle emotion, and playful spirit of his era. His refined technique, delicate color palette, and poetic sensibility influenced generations of artists and marked a transition from the grandeur of Baroque to the intimacy of Rococo. Among his most famous works are “Pilgrimage to Cythera” and “The Embarkation for Cythera.” Despite his short life, Watteau left a lasting legacy on European art.
