The Free City of Kraków (1815-1846) was created by the Congress of Vienna as a semi-independent republic under the protection of Austria, Prussia, and Russia. In 1835, following public opposition to coins bearing Russian imperial symbols, the Senate authorized a distinct local coinage with Polish national imagery.
The new monetary unit, the Kraków zloty, was divided into 30 groszy. All coins were struck at the Vienna Mint in limited quantities, in silver denominations of 5 groszy, 10 groszy, and 1 zloty. The Free City had no right to issue paper money.
The coinage circulated until 1846, when Kraków was annexed by Austria and the zloty was replaced by the Austrian florin. Owing to their short period of issue and low mintages, these coins are today regarded as important relics of Poland’s final phase of monetary autonomy.
