Obv.: Panoramic city view of Wroclaw (Breslau) with fortifications and figures in the foreground; above, two angels hold the helmeted city coat of arms; below, in cartouche: VRATISLAVIA.

(Here the mouths refuse [to speak], but outward splendor betters this medal). 

Rev.: Armored and draped bust of Emperor Leopold I to right, crowned with laurel.

Issued in 1669 to commemorate the act of homage rendered by the city of Wroclaw/Breslau (now Poland), Silesia, to Emperor Leopold I, ruler of the Holy Roman Empire (Austria) and the Habsburg hereditary lands. Such ceremonies affirmed the city’s loyalty and fealty to the new sovereign. Leopold I (1640-1705) was one of the longest-reigning emperors of the era, noted for his defense of Central Europe and consolidation of Habsburg power.
