Russia Silver Commemorative Badge 1894 - The 25th anniversary of the "Э. Кортманъ" firm

18.81g. 36x23mm. Silver, hot (fired) polychrome enamels. 

Presumably issued as a commemorative badge for employees of the firm on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. 

Obv.: Shield-shaped silver token with suspension loop above. In the center, the Roman numeral XXV in raised silver against a red hot-enamel ground. Surrounding ornamental cartouche. Legend above: Э. И. КОРТМАНЪ. Date below: 30-го АВГ. At the sides, 1869 to the left and 1894 to the right. 

Rev.: Plain silver field bearing a stylized engraved signature “И. Кортманъ”, executed in cursive script.

The engraving and guilloché workshop of Eduard Kortmann, located at 34 Nevsky Prospekt, St. Petersburg, was one of the largest and most important manufacturers of orders, badges, and insignia in Imperial Russia. Founded in 1869, when Kortmann acquired an existing engraving establishment from G. Bostel, the firm specialized in high-quality engraving and guilloché work, producing orders, medals, and regimental and academic badges. 

By the late 19th century, the workshop had reached an exceptional scale and reputation. In 1896, it was recorded that over a 25-year period the Kortmann establishment had trained up to 400 skilled metal engravers, highlighting its role as both a leading manufacturer and a major professional training center. 

After the death of Eduard Kortmann in 1903, the firm passed to several co-owners but retained the historic marks “Э. Кортманъ”, “K”. The workshop was closed in March 1918.
