Cruciform rocker for coins or lever scales with a fixed counterweight were probably invented in Byzantium in the 6th century AD and have been used for a long time in Asia and Europe. Famous European finds date back to the 12-16th centuries, in Asian countries this construction was popular until the 20th century. The materials for making scales of this type were copper alloys, wood, or ivory.
When opened, one rod is held vertically between the thumb and forefinger, while the coin being tested is placed on the spatula. The scales are balanced for a certain weight of the coin and do not need weights.
