So-called “tavern tokens” (also referred to as accounting tokens, monetary surrogates, café or club tokens, or metallic bonas) were widely used throughout the Russian Empire in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Typically denominated in kopeks, these tokens functioned as local means of payment in restaurants, taverns, gaming halls, retail shops, hotels, private clubs, and other establishments.

Tokens of this type were issued by private businesses and produced by independent die-sinking workshops on a custom-order basis. While not legal tender, they were accepted within specific venues or networks as internal currency, serving for quick calculations, staff settlements, or customer credit. Due to their wide geographic use and local issuance, the designs and quality varied greatly, and many reflect the stylistic and economic diversity of the Russian Empire.
