Karl Ernst von Baer (1792–1876) was a Baltic German scientist renowned for his foundational contributions to embryology, discovering the mammal egg cell and formulating the laws of embryology. His work extended across various fields including biology, geology, meteorology, and geography. Baer was a key figure in exploring European Russia and Scandinavia, and his research significantly advanced the scientific understanding of permafrost. He was a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, co-founder of the Russian Geographical Society, and had a critical view of Darwin's theory of evolution, emphasizing a teleological force in nature driving evolution. His legacy includes numerous awards, distinctions, and memorials in Estonia and Russia.
