Finland declared its independence from Russia on 6 December 1917, becoming a sovereign republic after more than a century as a Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire.
This medal commemorates the 75th anniversary of Finnish independence (1917-1992). The abstract, ice-like fractured surface on both sides symbolically reflects Finland’s northern climate and the resilience of the Finnish state. The restrained typography and emphasis on sculptural texture are characteristic of late 20th-century Finnish medallic art, where conceptual symbolism replaces traditional narrative or heraldic imagery.
