This medal was issued in 1968 in memory of Kaarlo Juho Ståhlberg (1865-1952), the first President of Finland (1919-1925) and one of the principal founders of the Finnish constitutional state. Ståhlberg played a decisive role in shaping Finland’s republican system, legal framework, and democratic institutions following independence.
The abstract reverse reflects the modernist direction of Finnish medallic art in the late 1960s, moving away from traditional allegorical imagery toward symbolic, non-figurative expression. Johan Finne, one of Finland’s prominent sculptors and medallists of the period, employed abstraction to convey intellectual structure, continuity, and the enduring foundations of statehood rather than narrative symbolism.
