Voldemar Panso (1920-1977) was a central figure in 20th-century Estonian theatre-director, actor, theatre pedagogue, publicist, and theatre scholar. Born in Tomsk, he died in Tallinn.
Panso founded and led the Department of Stage Arts at the Tallinn State Conservatory, which became the cornerstone of professional theatre education in Estonia. On the basis of its graduates, he established the Estonian State Youth Theatre.
He worked as an actor and director at the Estonian Drama Theatre, Vanemuine Theatre, the Russian Drama Theatre, and was also active in television and film. His productions were noted for their artistic innovation, imaginative staging, and psychological depth.
Panso is especially remembered for his stage interpretations of works by Oskar Luts, A. H. Tammsaare, Maxim Gorky, and Aleksis Kivi. His legacy had a lasting impact on Estonian theatre and cultural life.
