The voyage led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan was the first successful circumnavigation of the globe. Departing from Spain in 1519 with a fleet of five ships, Magellan sought a western sea route to the Spice Islands. The expedition traversed the Atlantic, discovered and navigated the strait at the southern tip of South America (now called the Strait of Magellan), and crossed the vast Pacific Ocean. Although Magellan was killed in the Philippines in 1521, his fleet-commanded by Juan Sebastián Elcano -continued the journey, ultimately returning to Spain in 1522 with only one surviving ship, the Victoria. This historic expedition proved the world’s oceans were interconnected and marked a milestone in the Age of Exploration.
