42.94g. 35mm. VF/XF. Attractive toning with pleasing eye appeal.
A very high-quality modern reproduction of an exceptionally rare and well-recognized classical issue. According to the family provenance, this piece was acquired before 1990 in exchange for gold coins.
The original issue is of such rarity that most collectors are unlikely ever to encounter or afford an example during their collecting lifetime. Only a small number of genuine specimens are recorded in auction archives, with results approaching or exceeding €100,000.
Obv.: Slow quadriga driven right by charioteer, wearing chiton, holding reins in both hands and kentron in left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses; in exergue, lion running right.
Rev. Head of Arethusa right, wearing olive wreath, earring and necklace, framed within a circle and surrounded by four dolphins swimming clockwise; “ΣY - RA - KOΣ - ION”.
For prototype, cf. BMC 63; Head, Guide, Period II.C, 33; Boehringer type 376.
Modern replica for study - sold as is, no returns.
With NGC label: 8581832-001 NOT GENUINE.
