The inscription OST on German coins of 1916 refers to Oberbefehlshaber Ost (“Supreme Commander East”), the German military administration that governed the occupied territories of the former western provinces of the Russian Empire during World War I. Special coinage bearing this mark was issued for circulation within these occupied regions, forming part of the monetary system imposed by the German authorities in areas corresponding today to parts of Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, and Belarus.
