Emergency coinage. Countermark: crown, GP below. Gomes  L1 31.

Host coin: Spain (Madrid) 5 Pesetas 1871 - Amadeo I (1871-1873). KM 666.

Decree of 31.03.1887 ordained that all foreign silver and copper coinage circulating in the Azores was to be countermarked with a crowned G.P. (Governo Portugues) within a circle. These also were eventually to be replaced or exchanged by current Portuguese coinage upon their entry into the public treasury. This countermark has been heavily counterfeited.
