Oskar Luts (7 January 1887 - 23 March 1953) was a classic of Estonian literature, a writer and a trained pharmacist. He was born in the village of Järvepera (Palamuse parish) and died in Tartu. Luts is best known as the author of the Paunvere cycle of works, above all the novel Kevade (Spring), as well as its sequels Suvi (Summer) and Sügis (Autumn), which are regarded as foundational works of Estonian national prose of the 20th century. 

Writing in the tradition of popular realism, Luts combined gentle humor, sentimentality, and vivid depictions of everyday life. His characters - Toots, Arno, Teele, Kiir, and others - became enduring cultural archetypes in Estonia. Luts is often compared to Charles Dickens for his humane tone and empathy, although he did not write large-scale novels. 

Many of his works were adapted for the stage and screen; the film Kevade (1969) and its sequels became classics of Estonian cinema. Luts remains one of the most influential and widely read figures in Estonian literary history.
