After the expulsion of Ottoman forces, the autonomous Cretan State, headed by Prince George of Greece, was founded under Ottoman suzerainty in December 1898. In 1913, after the Balkan Wars, Crete acceded to Greece. 

Issue of interest to collectors of coins of Greece and Turkey.
