Maxim Gorky (1868-1936) was a prominent Russian and Soviet writer, playwright, and political activist. Renowned as a founder of socialist realism, Gorky made a lasting impact on Russian literature through his novels, short stories, and plays depicting the struggles and aspirations of the working class. One of his most famous works is the poetic prose piece “The Song of the Stormy Petrel” (“Pesnya o Burevestnike”, 1901), which became a symbol of revolutionary spirit and change. In this allegorical poem, the stormy petrel is depicted as a fearless bird soaring above an impending storm, inspiring hope and determination. The piece resonated strongly with the revolutionary generation and cemented Gorky’s reputation as the “bard of the revolution.”
