The Kazan Cathedral (Kazansky Sobor) is a prominent Russian Orthodox cathedral located on Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg, Russia. Constructed between 1801 and 1811 to the design of architect Andrey Voronikhin, the cathedral was built to house the revered icon of Our Lady of Kazan, one of the most important sacred objects in Russia. Inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, the cathedral is noted for its grand colonnade and neoclassical architecture. After Russia’s victory over Napoleon in 1812, Kazan Cathedral became a national memorial of military glory, and many Russian commanders, including Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov, are buried there. Today, Kazan Cathedral remains an active place of worship and one of St. Petersburg’s most iconic landmarks.
