King Oscar I of Sweden and Norway (1799-1859) died on July 8, 1859, after a reign marked by moderate reforms and a keen interest in culture and national heritage. Following his death, Oscar I’s remains were transferred to the Riddarholmen Church (Riddarholmskyrkan) in Stockholm - the historic burial place of Swedish monarchs since the 17th century.
