Germany, Saxony (possibly Naumburg) AR Denar ND (c.1065-1100) - Anonymous

1.01g. 15mm. XF/VF.

Obv: Cross with pellets in quarters, decorative imitation of legend.

Rev: Wedge-shaped cross, decorative imitation of legend. Raised rims.

Dannenberg 1347 var.; Kilger 4.1.

The early pfennige of Saxony were known as "wendenpfennige" and "hochrandpfennige" from their up-raised edges and attributed to the early Polish bishoprics and kingdoms. More recent studies have concluded they were civic issues of various cities, with places such as Bremen, Halle-Giebichenstein, Meissen, Merseberg, and Naumburg being cited as points of origin.

Issue of interest to collectors of coins of Germany and Poland.
