ЗА СПАСАНIЕ / ПОГИБАВШИХЪ
(For saving the drowning).
The medal For Saving the Drowning was originally instituted in 1809 during the reign of Emperor Alexander I. It was awarded in gold and silver for acts of humanity performed with personal risk, but not falling under the statutes of the orders, and in silver for the rescue of people during fires, natural disasters, and incidents involving drowning. The wording of the inscription was modified by Imperial order on 12 February 1904, changing the former formula For saving the drowning to the new form For saving the drowning as it appears on the medals struck between 1904 and 1915. Saint-Petersburg Mint production of this period is associated with the work of A. F. Vasyutinsky, although these medals bear no signature.
