SELF GOVERNMENT NORTHERN NIGERIA 15TH MARCH 1959.

This medal commemorates the achievement of self-government in Northern Nigeria on 15 March 1959, a key step toward Nigeria’s full independence the following year. The obverse honors Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, a central political figure and leader of the Northern People’s Congress (NPC). The reverse mottoes — “One North – One People” and “Salama” (“peace” in Hausa) — reflect the political messaging of the NPC during the late colonial transition period. Such medals were produced for political supporters and participants in the autonomy celebrations.
