Obv.: Double-headed eagle; latin legend “I A P A D G C & M D T M & P & A R A” (Ioannes Alexii filius Petrus Alexii filius Dei Gratia Czari & Magni Ducas Totius Mafnae & Parvae & Albae Russiarum Autocratores).
Rev.: Orb with stars on horizontal and vertical bands; latin legend “MON NOV FACTA SIEV A 1686”.
Severin 8. Extremely rare.
A highly interesting issue produced to supplant Polish Półtoraks in the newly regained territory of Little Russia (modern Ukraine); the first and only Russian coin made by rolling (Walzwerk). They were used for the payment of salaries to Streltsy and Cossacks who participated in the Crimean campaign of 1687. In 1689, their circulation was banned – attempts to introduce this base coin into monetary circulation were unsuccessful.
