This medal was instituted in 1841 by Prince-Bishop Petar II Petrović-Njegoš as the first official decoration of Montenegro, awarded for bravery in battle. It continued to be issued during the Balkan Wars (1912–1913) and World War I (1914–1918), including to some Allied soldiers who served on the Macedonian Front.
