The origins of Tallinn Tõnismäe Reaalgümnaasium trace back to the founding of the Reval Main Public School in 1789, which became the first Russian-language school in Tallinn. According to documents from the National Archives, two two-class Russian elementary schools were operating in Reval at the time. In 1873, the Ministry of Education merged them into a single three-class city school, located at Mere Street 69 (now Pikk Street). 

By January 1, 1874, the school had 69 pupils and 5 teachers, including Orthodox and Lutheran religion instructors. 

In 1889, to mark the 100th anniversary, the school was renamed the Reval Primary School of Empress Catherine II. This name remained until 1917, when it was replaced with a number during the revolutionary period. 

Over time, the school underwent multiple reorganizations and name changes, reflecting broader shifts in governance and educational policy. On November 20, 1917, it became Reval City Primary School No. 19, and this date was later celebrated as the school's founding day. 

In 1993, the school adopted its current name: Tallinna Tõnismäe Reaalkool. 

Throughout its history, the school operated in various locations across Tallinn, before finally settling in 1960 at its present building at the intersection of Pärnu Road and Suur-Ameerika Street (Pärnu mnt 50). It has remained a cornerstone of Russian-language education in Estonia and celebrated its 50th graduating class in 1998.
