Latvia Badge of the Order of the Three Stars (1924-1940)

The Order of the Three Stars features a white enamel cross with a gilded border. The center of the obverse contains a blue enamel medallion with stylized gilded edging, with three stars in the middle. The reverse has a gilded medallion inscribed with the motto “PER ASPERA AD ASTRA” and the words “LATVIJAS/REPUBLIKA/1918.g.18.NOVEMBRIS” (Latvian Republic, November 18, 1918). The order ribbon is blue with golden stripes along both edges. The badge of the order is attached to the ribbon via a gilded silver oak leaf wreath. 

The Order of the Three Stars (Latvian: Triju Zvaigžņu ordenis) is the highest state award of the Republic of Latvia and the first civil order of the country. It was initially established on March 24, 1924, in commemoration of the founding of the Latvian state. It was re-established after Latvia regained independence by a decree of President Ulmanis on October 25, 1994. The motto of the Order of the Three Stars is "Per aspera ad astra" ("Through hardships to the stars"). The Order of the Three Stars is awarded for special merit in service to the nation in state, municipal, public, cultural, educational, scientific, sports, or economic activities. It may also be awarded to heads of state and government from other countries, leaders of international organizations, foreign ambassadors, and other foreign officials. The Order of the Three Stars consists of five classes and three grades of honorary badges.
