21.99g. XF/XF+. Well-preserved exemplar with some mint luster, good relief details and beautiful old light-grey patina. Bitkin E1 R1; KM 110; Davenport GT II 2363. Rare.
The obverse of the coin features a double-headed eagle holding a scepter and an orb in its talons. Its chest is adorned with the coat of arms of Jever. Along the outer ring is an inscription that translates to 'Under the shelter of your wings.'
The reverse showcases a wreath of laurel branches, encircling the denomination in words and the minting date. Along the edge, an inscription translates to "Frederica Augusta Sophia, princess of the Anhalt dynasty, ruler of Jever."
The small principality of Jever, located in northern Germany, came under Catherine II's rule following the death of her brother, the Duke of Anhalt-Zerbst. It was annexed into Napoleon's domains by the Treaty of Tilsit in 1807 but briefly returned to Russian administration from 1813 to 1818. Talers bearing Russian state symbols were minted by the Duke's widow with the permission of Paul I, who held the title of Prince of Jever.
