Great Britain (Allen and Moore, Birmingham) Satirical Token ‘To Hanover’ 1849 – Victoria (1837-1901)

3.40g. 22mm. AU/UNC.

Obv: Diademed head of young queen Victoria left; “VICTORIA REGINA 1849”.

Rev.: Duke riding a horse (in the style of St George slaying the dragon); “TO HANOVER / 1837”.

BHM 1785.

When Victoria was crowned as Queen, she was unable to fulfil the role of King of Hanover under Salic Law. Her unpopular uncle Ernest Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland, who was the oldest male heir to the throne was sent off to Hanover instead to fulfil the role, and the counters/tokens were produced to celebrate his departure. They are also known as ‘Cumberland Jacks’.
