Roman Empire (Rome) AR Antoninianus AD 238 – Pupienus (April-July AD 238) - NGC AU

Strike: 5/5, Surface 4/5. An outstanding exemplar with magnificent mint luster and perfect relief details. Rare state of preservation.

Obv.: Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Pupienus to right; “IMP CAES PVPIEN MAXIMVS AVG”.

Rev.: Clasped right hands (dextrarum iunctio); “PATRES SENATVS”.

RIC IV.2 11b; RSC III 21; BMC 92-94.

On the news of the Gordian I and his son defeat and deaths, the Senate met in closed session in the Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus and voted for two senators to be installed as co-emperors: Pupienus and Balbinus. Clasped hands probably meant to represent those of Pupienus and Balbinus.
